Homeopathy

Homeopathy

-focuses on the total state of the person

-the intervention is chosen in imitation of the person’s whole state, in hopes that it will stimulate the person’s vitality, with a resulting improvement in the overall condition.

-uses highly dilute (even non-molecular) remedies which do not follow the laws of chemistry and mass action, and would perhaps be better understood as “communications” rather than drugs.

The Synergy of Dreamwork and Homeopathy

In my experience homeopathic medicine is a powerful and synergistic companion to dream-based therapy. This is partly because dreams depict our problems and stuck points so clearly (often in very exaggerated and uncompensated ways); and these nightly “profiles of stuckness” can be very valuable to a trained homeopath, providing clues in the search for a good remedy.

It is also because homeopathy is non-repressive in its nature. It does not attempt to control or suppress symptoms, or even palliate them. It does not aim to conquer diseases or kill germs, or prevent pain. It’s goal is only to strengthen a person’s vitality, so that he or she can muster a more vital response to whatever is happening. This increase in vitality is  reflected in the dream life. After receiving a beneficial homeopathic remedy, people will often report that they remember more dreams, and get more insight and guidance from their dreams.

Orthodox Medicine

-focuses on the main presenting problem

-the intervention is chosen in opposition to the main problem, in hopes that it will relieve, block, prevent, suppress, mitigate, or palliate that problem.

-uses concentrated drugs which follow the laws of chemistry and mass action.

How Does Orthodox Medicine Differ from Homeopathic Medicine?

Hahnemann’s remedy kit

One good way to describe homeopathy is with an analogy-- it's like trying to find a disturbance in electrical field. You can't see the disturbance directly, so you have to try to find it by examining all the characteristic patterns that appear in all aspects of the person's life, many of which are related to these subtle but powerful disturbances.

Once the disturbance is "seen" (which can take a while) the remedy is given which matches that pattern of disturbance most closely, ie: can both create it and cure it...this is homeopathy.

Many people have started to get a felt sense of the

disturbance they are saddled with when they watch

themselves on videotape, particularly when they

are talking about dreams, obsessions, addictions,

or fears. It is as if they can sense something

operating there that is “not them”. Once they start

to sense how it is operating, they are already

moving towards their truer selves. Typically I will

make a DVD of particular parts of a session so

people can watch themselves in action.

These disturbances cannot always be completely eliminated, but they can be diluted and weakened over time. As they are weakened the person starts to feel better on all levels. It's not so much about giving a person tools to cope better, it’s more about freeing them up to use the tools that are already within reach.

The Metaphor of the Disturbed Electrical Field

Here’s another metaphor that works for some people--imagine that you had a refracting crystal hanging in your window, and when the sun passed through it at a certain time of day it would create a beautiful set of rainbow patterns on your walls.

Now--imagine that every hour someone came into your place and placed a new crystal in the window. Your job is to figure out the properties of the crystal without being able to look at it directly. All you are allowed to do is examine the rainbow patterns that are appearing on the walls, and from that you must extrapolate back to the crystal itself, and make your best educated guess about what kind of crystal it is.

Sound interesting? Frustrating? Impossible? This is very much like the job of the homeopath--you cannot directly examine a person’s vital force to ascertain what may be disturbing it. All you can do is look at the resulting pattern of symptoms which are produced by the disturbance. Then you must make your best educated guess about which substance in nature (ie: which homeopathic remedy) best matches the disturbance, and will therefore be most helpful in correcting it.
